On the surface, CBD Essence has many of the elements of a fabulous CBD company. Prices aren’t great, but they are average. The CBD quality is good. The company has a high rating on TrustPilot.
And it states that it is fully transparent, using certified organic CBD oil in its products with a CO2 extraction method, providing lab results available right in the product description.
CBD Essence boasts direct involvement in researching, producing, lab testing, and selling its full spectrum CBD oils, topicals, edibles, capsules and pet products.
A deeper dive, however, turns up some contradictory information. While most hemp is grown using organic methods, it is very difficult to get an organic certification, particularly for CBD oil.
Any company that works with farms and processing facilities to get this certification proudly displays a seal on its website. CBD Essence does not.
As a matter of fact, the company does not appear to have membership or certification with any of the major industry organizations like the US Hemp Roundtable or the Hemp Authority.
The other red flag with this company is that it claims to use a CO2 extraction method in solvent-free facilities, but our lab results found ethanol residue in the oil we sampled.
This indicates an ethanol extraction method. The lab results displayed in the website are incomplete, and products have not been tested for the presence of pesticides, solvents, mycotoxins, or heavy metals.
Other review sites rate this company highly, and the overall full spectrum profile of the oil we sampled is very good. But since these products are expensive, you may want to shop around for a company that does not make such inconsistent claims about its products.
- Robust full spectrum formula
- 14-day satisfaction guarantee
- Free shipping with orders of $49 or more
- Wide range of products
- Large format oil available (sizes larger than 1oz)
- Transparency for this company is in question
- Prices are expensive
Headquartered in St. Petersburg, Florida, CBD Essence has been around for a while. Don Ballou founded the company in 2014, when he decided to connect his love for cannabis products with his technical and manufacturing experience.
He was amazed at what CBD could do for his ADHD, and he wanted others to experience the same benefits. In 2015, Ballou founded Nutrahemp, which became the parent company for CBD Essence, along with a couple of other labels as well.
CBD Essence does not indicate the state of origin for the hemp it uses to make its CBD products.
In several places it mentions that the hemp is domestically grown; but in others, it mentions importing its hemp. The company claims that its CBD oils are certified organic, but there is no support for this statement anywhere on the website.
Additionally, though it states it uses a CO2 extraction process, our independent lab results indicated the presence of ethanol residue—which would point to ethanol extraction instead.
CBD Essence does display lab results prominently on the product pages, but these results are incomplete. There is no testing for mycotoxins, pesticides, solvents, or heavy metals.
Shipping and Returns
CBD Essence offers free shipping for all orders of $49 or more, and the company will process your order within two days. The company ships via First Class Mail through the USPS to all 50 states.
The shipping policy indicates that you should expect to receive your order within five business days.
We always order our CBD with the standard shipping options so that we can get a feel for what the average customer experience is. We placed our order on a Tuesday and it was sent out the next day. It took a full nine days after that to get our package in the mail, though. So be prepared to wait for your CBD.
We always appreciate it when a company gives you an opportunity to give their products a try risk-free. With CBD Essence, you have 14 days to make sure you like the product.
If you are dissatisfied within this time-period, you can contact the company to request a refund. If you simply change your mind and don’t open the package, then you have 30 days to request a refund.
CBD Essence’s Products
CBD Essence offers just one kind of CBD oil, but it is available in multiple sizes and concentrations. The full spectrum formula has a moderately robust profile that the product page states has been refined over four years—though we are not certain what that means.
There are no ingredients listed in the description, but it says that there are four ingredients in this product. Most CBD oils contain only two (CBD and a carrier oil) unless they are flavored.
Full Spectrum Hemp Oil Tincture CBD Mouth Drops ($44 – $309) – When you zoom way in on the tiny photo of the back of this product, you can make out the ingredients list. They include hemp emulsified with organic hempseed oil (CBD suspended in hempseed oil), sunflower lecithin, and stevia.
There is not a whole lot of variety in concentration, but it is nice that you can get this oil in different sizes. Choose between 300mg, 600mg, or 2400mg of CBD in a 1oz, 2oz, or 8oz bottle; or go for 1000mg of CBD in a 1oz bottle.
Some people appreciate the ritual of taking their daily dose of CBD oil. Others are not interested in dealing with the mess and bitter flavor—especially with full spectrum formulas.
If you are looking for a full spectrum CBD product that is convenient to travel with and is premeasured, then CBD capsules may be a good choice for you. CBD essence offers one kind of capsule in one concentration. It’s powerful, too, making it easier for people who need higher doses.
CBD Oil Capsules Full Spectrum Hemp Pills ($74 – $229) – With these capsules, more is definitely less. The price per milligram of CBD goes down significantly when you purchase bottles containing 120 capsules, compared to 30 capsules. Capsules contain 35mg of CBD each, suspended in MCT oil and sunflower lecithin.
We are unclear where the liposome formula claim comes from in the product description for this product, as there are not very many companies making a liposome formula and they generally do not come in pill format.
It may be in reference to the MCT oil used, which does aid absorption, but a product is not necessarily a “liposome formula” merely because it contains MCT oil.
CBD Essence does not make CBD gummies, but the company does make CBD taffy. We thought we would mention it here, since taffy is a unique format we don’t typically see from CBD companies. The product description for some flavors indicates they are made with organic CBD oil, and for others an organic designation is not mentioned.
CBD Oil Edible Taffy Chewy Candy ($14 – $84) – Choose between mint, chocolate, orange, chocolate mint, or orange mint flavors. Each taffy is made with 10mg of CBD and food-grade essential oils for flavoring. You can order just ten, 32, or an entire pound.
CBD Essence topicals may potentially be among the best products from this company. There are two different kinds of lotions, and they are priced comparably to other mid-level brands. They both contain aloe, essential oils, and other botanicals, to create a soothing effect targeted for specific intended effects.
CBD Lotion Pro LifeStyle All Purpose Hemp Cream ($55) – This cream is meant for general everyday use, to keep your skin looking and feeling smooth and healthy. With 600mg of CBD, this lotion will soothe aches and pains and soften your skin at the same time.
CBD Muscle Rub Hot Sport Cream ($51) – CBD Essence’s Hot Sport Cream starts with the same base ingredients as the all purpose cream, but it also contains capsaicin for a warming effect. This will help relax tight muscles and keep them more supple as you recover from your toughest workouts.
CBD Essence implores you to be your dog’s health hero with the two products it makes for your pup. Cat-owners will have to shop elsewhere for the purrfect CBD oil for their feline. With CBD Essence, you can find CBD oil and dog biscuits for your medium-sized pooch.
CBD Edible Hemp Oil Dog Lick ($19 – $29) – This CBD oil is the same formula as the stuff made for humans, just with a lighter concentration and “smoke” flavored for Fido’s enjoyment. Choose between a smaller .5oz bottle with 75mg of CBD, or a 1oz bottle with 150mg of CBD.
CBD Edible Hemp Oil Medium Dog Biscuits ($14 – $64) – You must really love your pup if you are going to spend this kind of money on them. Pricing out at around $1.25 to $1.40 per biscuit, they come in bags of 10, 25, or 50. Each biscuit contains 10mg of CBD, so you may need to break them in half even for your medium dog.
We always send off a sample of CBD oil from the companies we review to a third party lab, so that we can ensure an unbiased, objective evaluation.
We may not have thought twice about the marketing for CBD Essence if we hadn’t noticed one important detail that makes us question the statements made on almost every page of the company’s website.
CBD Essence mentions everywhere that their facilities are solvent-free and that they use a CO2 extraction method for their full spectrum CBD. But the presence of ethanol in the CBD we sampled indicates otherwise.
Ethanol extraction is a perfectly standard method of obtaining CBD from hemp plants, and the amount of residue the independent lab found was within the acceptable range. The problem that we have is with the false claim of a different, more popular and more expensive form of extraction that uses no solvents.
This oil is not the best full spectrum we have seen, but it is also not the worst. The fact that it does have most of the cannabinoids we would expect to see is good; but CBN is missing, and the potency is kind of weak for the majority of other minor actives as well as THC.
Finally, while we do appreciate the presence of more CBD than expected, the label is off by 13 percent. We could definitely be more forgiving if there weren’t some other more serious discrepancies with this company.

The CBD Essence website is actually very nicely done. It makes the company appear incredibly transparent, especially considering all lab reports are readily accessible right from each product page.
Unfortunately these lab results are incomplete. The availability of ingredients lists is inconsistent and claims are unverifiable.
The top menus make it really easy to find what you are looking for, though. So if you do decide to go with this company, everything is right in the menu ready for ordering.
The blog does have some educational material, but you are better off checking out other blogs if you are a beginner.
CBD Essence boasts that they have “24/7” customer support. However, our attempts to reach them through their email address resulted in zero responses.
We would instead recommend calling or texting their phone number, or sending a message on the live chat window on their website. These options are most certainly not around the clock though, and will require you to try to contact them within a specific window of time.
Live chat seemed to be the best option in our experience. We had a pleasant and informative discussion with their representative, although it took a while to get connected to them. If we were to boil down our thoughts on CBD Essence’s customer service, we’d call it a mixed bag.
CBD Essence puts up a good front and may be able to effectively fool other review sites.
But because we always test our products, the results for this one made us more vigilant to other discrepancies and unverified statements on the site. Based on our research, this company’s marketing is either dangerously negligent or simply deceptive.
Either way, you probably do not want to buy your CBD products from a company that makes false claims or statements about the quality of its CBD with no backing.
It isn’t too difficult to find average CBD products at an above average price, and we definitely have some on our list that are far more transparent than CBD Essence. We suggest checking out some of the other reviews on our site and shopping elsewhere.
