Garden of Life is not specifically a CBD company, but rather a vitamin and supplement company that makes CBD products. Somewhat controversial wellness doctor, neurologist, and bestselling New York Times author Dr. David Perlmutter has attached his name to the company’s CBD line—hence the Dr. Formulated attachment to the branding of the products.
The company sells CBD oils, CBD gummies, CBD topicals, and CBD capsules, many with additives intended to boost specific effects of the CBD. Garden of Life seems to have some of the best standards in the industry, and it is in the process of getting all of its hemp crops certified as organic.
This was supposed to happen in March 2020 according to the website, but there are no updates indicating that it has. The company does have a lot of other certifications like B-Corp, Good Manufacturing Practices, LEED, and Green-e Energy. All of its CBD products are certified THC-free by Labdoor, a leading independent lab in the industry.
One important note about this company is that it is now owned by Nestle. So it is not the same company it was when it was founded. Now, the corporation that owns this “all natural” branded supplement producer also owns brands like Lean Cuisine and Smarties.
Garden of Life boasts a whole-plant formula—which is typically another way of saying full spectrum—but the product descriptions also say that they are made with a broad spectrum formula. We purchased a sample of oil that was supposed to be broad spectrum, but it turned out to be an isolate, with no cannabinoids other than CBD present.
If you are looking for a company that has the backing of a large corporation like Nestle, Garden of Life does have plenty of certifications indicating a clean product. Just know that you may or may not get the full entourage effect the company advertises.
- Wellness brand with expertise in supplements
- Backing of large corporation
- Affordable prices
- All natural growing practices
- Doctor formulated
- Products are not made with the formula advertised
- No pet products
Garden of Life was founded in 2000 by Jordan Rubin, who was suffering from Crohn’s Disease at the time, and was looking for a way to help his symptoms. He started by going to an all natural, raw diet, and it inspired a line of nutritional supplements that formed the base of Garden of Life. The company launched its line of CBD products in 2019.
Garden of Life grows the hemp used in its CBD products on an all-natural farm in Oregon, where the company claims the soil and the environment are just right for growing the best hemp you can find.
Their hemp is currently at >80 percent organic, but it is in the process of getting 100 percent certified in the near future. Garden of Life uses a solvent-free CO2 extraction process, and the company displays lab results on its website.
Shipping and Returns
Garden of Life does not make any statements about when they will process orders, but they do offer free shipping on orders over $25 when you provide your email and sign up for regular updates and newsletters. The company only ships within the US right now, and it can send orders to all 50 states.
We ordered our CBD on a weekday, and Garden of Life processed and sent our package out the very next day. The website says that regular mail should have gotten our CBD oil to us within two to five business days, but it took a whole seven days after our order was shipped.
Garden of Life’s refund policy is unclear. In the frequently asked questions, the company states that you can return any item you are unsatisfied with for up to 30 days and receive a refund. Upon checkout, however, a box appears that makes it seem like you have to sign up for their e-newsletter in order to get the 30 day satisfaction guarantee.
Garden of Life’s Products
Garden of Life keeps things simple with CBD oil droppers available in a few different concentrations and just one variation meant to tackle inflammation. The one thing that makes us wary about this CBD oil is how prominent the advertising for an entourage effect is.
The company touts the full effect of plenty of terpenes and cannabinoids, but the sample we had tested turned out to be an isolate, despite claims of a broad spectrum formula.
Additionally, the “entourage effect blend” Garden of Life frequently refers to is actually a blend of essential oils like rosemary and cloves that the company adds to their CBD drops. These essential oils are known to produce effects in your system, but they are not the entourage effect referred to regarding CBD.
Dr. Formulated CBD Whole Hemp Extract Liquid Drops or Sprays ($25.00 – $92.99) – This CBD oil comes in either peppermint or chocolate mint flavors. Blended with MCT oil and other essential oils to create the natural flavoring and additional effects, you can find these drops in concentrations ranging between 300mg and 1500mg per one mL bottle. You can also find this same product in a spray bottle, with 900mg of CBD.
Dr. Formulated CBD + Inflammatory Response Liquid Drops ($32.79) – These are the standard CBD oils that Garden of Life makes with 2mg of astaxanthin added to help combat inflammation. This variation only comes in a 450mg CBD concentration in a 30mL bottle.
CBD capsules are a great way to get your CBD in when you’re on-the-go. Many people go with capsules, too, because they are not fond of the earthy flavor of hemp found in most CBD products.
Garden of Life capsules are precisely-dosed with the company’s standard CBD oil, along with its signature “entourage effect blend,” which is made up of plant extracts other than hemp.
Dr. Formulated CBD Whole Hemp Extract Softgels ($30.99 – $61.99) – Vegan-friendly capsules are difficult to come by, so we really appreciate the fact that these are plant-based. You can find these in concentrations of 10mg or 30mg per capsule, in a bottle of 30.
Dr. Formulated CBD + Sleep Softgels ($40.99) – If you are struggling to get the sleep you need even after you incorporate CBD into your routine, maybe you need a little something extra.
These softgels are the same standard formula, but they also have organic lemon balm, chamomile, and valerian added to them to help you relax to the max and drift off to dreamland. Comes in a concentration of 15mg of CBD per softgel.
Dr. Formulated CBD + Turmeric Softgels 30 Softgels ($40.99) – Turmeric is an known anti inflammatory, and Garden of Life has added this, along with ginger and black pepper, to create a wellness blend meant to help you feel your best. Available in a strength of 15mg of CBD per capsule.
Who doesn’t love CBD gummies? These ones are even vegan, so you can enjoy them guilt-free while you get your daily dose of CBD. Garden of life has created CBD gummies that are essentially along the same formulation as their capsules, with some added ingredients to intensify specific effects.
Dr. Formulated CBD Gummies ($29.99 – $34.99) – These are the gold standard CBD gummies, made with Garden of Life’s signature CBD. You can get a jar of 60 in either mango or tart cherry flavors, and each serving (2 gummies) has 10mg of CBD. The extra strength formula comes in only tart cherry flavor, and it has 20mg of CBD per serving.
Dr. Formulated CBD + Sleep Gummies ($29.99) – With 10mg of CBD plus organic lemon balm and valerian extracts, these CBD gummies will help you get the rest you need so you can wake up refreshed and ready to tackle the day ahead. Only available in a blueberry flavor.
Dr. Formulated CBD + Inflammatory Response Gummies ($29.99) – Garden of Life has infused these gummies with curcumin from organic turmeric root and ginger extract to help support healthy immune functioning, thereby reducing inflammation and helping you feel your best.
One thing we really appreciate about Garden of Life is the fact that all their CBD products are vegan, and their topicals are no exception. The company makes two different CBD lotions, one with a focus on skin health, and the other with a focus on soothing sore muscles. These lotions both have Ayurvedic botanicals to promote healing, and they are well-priced for premium CBD topical products.
Dr. Formulated CBD Intensive Recovery Lotion ($36.99) – With a whole 800mg of CBD per bottle, this is the strongest topical Garden of Life offers. It is formulated to cool, soothe and moisturize without creating a greasy feeling on the skin.
Dr. Formulated CBD Cooling Rescue Cream ($26.99) – While this lotion only has 200mg of CBD in the tube, it also has wintergreen and eucalyptus infused to create a powerful soothing effect to help with your post-workout recovery.
At CBD Study, we like to make sure you have all the facts when considering your CBD purchases. That’s why we send a sample of oil from every CBD company we review to a third-party lab. It’s always nice to have some reassurance from an independent source that what is on the label is actually what’s in the bottle.
For Garden of Life, the company has the right amount of CBD, but it is unfortunately not the whole plant extract Garden of Life has advertised. Whole plant extracts are full spectrum formulas, which means that there should be a robust profile of additional cannabinoids as well as some THC.
In one place on the product page, Garden of Life calls this oil a whole plant extract, and in another place it mentions that it is a broad spectrum formula—which is the same as a full spectrum minus the THC. As you can see, there are no minor active cannabinoids present in this sample.
That makes it more of an isolate formula. This does not take away from the purity and potency of the CBD itself, but there is no entourage effect because there is nothing for the CBD effects to combine with.

Since the Garden of Life website is not entirely dedicated to CBD, it may not be everybody’s ideal site. The company sells a lot of other products, but it does have an entire menu tab just for CBD. The company is not necessarily geared toward educating the beginner, and appears to be more for people who know what they are looking for from the moment they visit the site.
All the products under the CBD menu are on display and it is easy to find everything in one place—though it would be nice if items were in more obvious categories from the start.
Garden of Life can be reached through the contact form on their website. We received an email back from one of their “Gardeners” two days after sending a message to them.
They were very helpful and eager to give more details about their products. They also generously offered manufacturer’s coupons for future purchases on their online shop.
Garden of Life is a well-known and trusted company in the supplements industry. The company is owned by Nestle, so there is plenty of money to throw into making sure the products that come out of its CBD line are made with hemp that is organically-grown and processed on the most state-of-the-art equipment.
Garden of Life has certifications pointing to what a great company it is, and it claims that everything is traceable through Labdoor. The company has a solid line of CBD products, including oils, gummies, capsules, and topicals that meet just about every need, but we are just a bit wary about this company.
It claims that all of its products are made with broad spectrum CBD, but our third party lab results indicated that it is actually an isolate.
Additionally, the company brags about an entourage effect blend, making the reader think that it is referring to the effects one gets from a robust full or broad spectrum CBD formula, but it is actually just referring to a blend of essential extracts like rosemary, clove, and black pepper. This company is not incredibly transparent, and its shipping time left us waiting for our CBD longer than we wanted to.
The price is right, however, and the advertised amount of CBD is spot-on. If you are excited about finding vegan gummies, capsules, and topicals, and you are happy with an isolate formula, Garden of Life products will suit you just fine.
